Microwave and millimeter wave sensing systems and methodologies have shown tremendous potential for a broad range of applications including industrial process monitoring and subsurface imaging. This talk will cover recent advancements in microwave & millimeter wave inspection & process monitoring for the oil & gas and aerospace industries. State-of-the-art technologies will be presented while highlighting their practical utility. First-of-its-kind intrinsically safe microwave sensing system deployable in hazardous areas (Zone 0) in the oil & gas fields will be presented. The developed technology is certified to the highest instrument safety standards (e.g., ATEX directives). The developed system passed all the tests conducted by international testing body and declared in conformity with EU Directive 2014/34/EU relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX) by meeting the requirements of the IEC 60079 harmonized intrinsic safety standards. Subsequently, it was successfully deployed and currently piloted in the field. The certification effort and the associated technical challenges of developing and deploying such a technology for oil & gas applications will be discussed. In addition, the effectiveness of new set of microwave probes operating in various bands of the microwave frequency spectrum for inspection of on-shore and off-shore infrastructure, with particular emphasis on non-metallic structures will be highlighted. Finally, an overview of subsurface imaging and non-destructive testing of aerospace composites using custom built systems will also be presented.
