The First International Symposium on Intelligent Robots: Autonomy and Vision 2018

When: March 12, 2018 @ 8:30 AM – March 13, 2018 @ 7:45 PM
Where: City: Abu Dhabi

The extensive research efforts over the last few decades on development of intelligent robots has been addressing several fundamental challenges in coexistence of robots and humans ranging from psychological and philosophical aspects to interaction and communication mechanisms and to technological systems and architectures. In the past few decades, there have been tremendous advances in technologies for the design of intelligent robots to better assist human activities in homes, hospitals and factories, for personal, industrial, automotive, and a wide range of other applications. The advancement of these applications of intelligent robots crucially relies upon autonomy, which involves multiple technology facets, with controls, machine intelligence, computer vision, and human-robot interfaces being some of the crucial technology ingredients for perceiving and interacting with the external environment. Leveraging the energy transition: Opportunities for mobility, grid, and decarbonization

When: February 26, 2018 @ 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Where: City: Al Ain

Today’s disruptive technologies and digital strategies are driving transitions in the electricity grid, transportation and goals for a decarbonized future. The deployment of cleaner energy sources, global sustainability and climate resilience targets, and emerging consumer demands for personalized energy options is setting the stage for a new energy market landscape. Improvements to electrical energy storage, deployment of grid scale storage, and distributed energy resources are driving transitions to renewables for both electricity generation and transportation. Big data, blockchain technologies, and consumer preferences are ushering the transition to mobility as a service and to personalized energy on demand. Electrification and digitalization of the grid and mobility are accelerating energy transitions and their roles in a decarbonized future.  This talk will present the role of electrification, disruptive technologies, and digital strategies for transitions to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for the grid and transportation. AI APPLICATIONS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS IN UAE PUBLIC SECTORS AND INDUSTRY

When: February 26, 2018 @ 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Where: City: Dubai

launching the UAE AI strategy, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum said: “The UAE Centennial begins now, with the launch of massive projects such as the AI strategy to set up the basis for the coming phase. This strategy represents the post-smart government phase, and it will be relied on by various future services, sectors and infrastructure projects.” Over the next few decades, AI, through machine learning and autonomous systems, will stretch our social fabric and professional environment to the limit. Driverless cars, brain-machine connectivity, software-driven healthcare, chatbot concierge, intelligence quant machines, robotic process automation, and augmented tutoring are no longer in utopian future, but are rather here and now. This workshop will introduce basic AI concepts, tools, and prospects for applications in the UAE and will cover the following topics: Overview of AI (Concepts, Tools, and Technology) UAE vision on AI AI for Smart Public Sector Services AI trends in Industry Round Table Discussion Distinguished Speakers: Dr. Abulla Ismail, RIT Dubai Dr. Saeed Al Dhaheri, Smartworld, Dubai Dr. Sanjay Modak, RIT Dubai Tarek Saeed, IBM Si-Mohamed Saeed, Oracle Dr. Bassam Mahboub, DHA Location: RIT-Dubai Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Energy Storage for Smart Grid Applications, Dr. Said Al-Halla

When: February 27, 2018 @ 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Where: City: Al Ain

The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of energy storage technologies for smart grid applications. Some details will be provided on the fundamentals and functioning of one particular battery technology; namely lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries are currently the most promising battery chemistry for personal electronics and electric mobility applications and are increasing in use for stationary storage (on-grid and off-grid). A specific case study will be presented to illustrate the techno-economic viability of Li-ion batteries in smart grid applications. Biography Said Al-Hallaj is the CEO and co-founder of All Cell Technologies LLC, and a Research Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dr. Al-Hallaj earned his B.Sc and M.Sc in Chemical Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Said co-authored a book entitled “Hybrid Hydrogen Systems” and has published several book chapters and over fifty peer reviewed journal papers. He is also the co-inventor of numerous issued and pending patent applications in the areas of renewable energy, energy storage and water desalination. Location: UAEU Al Ain, United Arab Emirates
