Formal and Practical Aspects of Domain-Specific Languages: Recent Developments

When: February 22, 2018 @ 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
Where: Room: 04-GF-026, Bldg: Lecture Hall 1

Co-sponsored by: IEEE UAE section Domain-specific languages (DSLs) assist a software developer (or end-user) in writing a program using idioms that are like the abstractions found in a specific problem domain. Indeed, the enhanced software productivity and reliability benefits that have been reported from DSL usage are hard to ignore and DSLs are flourishing. However, tool support for DSLs is lacking when compared to the capabilities provided for standard General-Purpose Languages (GPLs). For example, support for unit testing of a DSL program, as well as DSL debuggers, are rare. A Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) has been performed to better understand the DSL research field, identify research trends, and any possible open issues. In this talk I will first introduce DSLs by discussing when and how to develop DSLs, then results from SMS will be presented. In the second part I will discuss some open DSL problems such as difficulties of combining DSLs.   Speaker(s): Prof. Marjan Mernik, Location: Room: 04-GF-026 Bldg: Lecture Hall 1 Zayed University, academic City , DXB Dubai , United Arab Emirates 00971

What does it need to take to avoid developing “wrong” Medical Technology products/services?

When: January 30, 2018 @ 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Where: Room: 103, Bldg: Engineering

Co-sponsored by: University of Dubai Healthcare will change dramatically in the next 20 years with the emergence of artificial intelligence (including machine and deep learning), 3D printing, personalised diagnosis and therapies, shift from therapy to prevention, and many related delivery and economic changes. Huge opportunities are present in emerging and developing nations … with completely different needs and infrastructural environments than we are used to have in Europe or the US … these also could be examples for reverse innovation. The talk will present the product and technology approach and some recent examples of the chair of catheter technologies and image guided therapies that focusses on joint product developments between clinicians and engineers leading to the question of what are good versus bad value propositions for Medical Technology Products? .       Speaker(s): Prof. Michael Friebe, Location: Room: 103 Bldg: Engineering University of Dubai dubai, United Arab Emirates 14143

Seminar: Embedded Generation; A Problematic Solution

When: December 19, 2017 @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Where: City: Masdar City, Abu Dhabi

The electricity distribution is moving to a new era with the restructuring of the electricity systems and the move towards smarter grids. Embedded Generation or what is commonly known as Distributed Generation (DG), especially the renewable ones, are considered as pivotal elements in this vision. This presentation defines distributed generation and highlights the numerous advantages that DG can bring to the electricity systems. Yet, the challenges and problems that DG can bring to the utility systems will be presented. The effects of DG units on different distribution systems operational aspects such as voltage profile, losses, protection, reliability and stability will be highlighted. Speaker(s): Prof. Ehab EL-Saadany, Location: MASDAR Institute A part of Khalifa University of Science and Technology Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Data Science, Smart Cities, and Social Media Intelligence

When: November 12, 2017 @ 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Where: City: Dubai

Co-sponsored by: University of Dubai A Smart City is a city that performs well in the following characteristics: economy, people, governance, mobility, environment and living. The high degree of datification and connectivity embedded in a Smart City demand tools and mechanisms for data manipulation and representation that facilitate the extraction of meaningful insight. However, this process of extracting knowledge from data requires Data Science. Design and operation of smart, efficient, and resilient cities has come to require data science skills. Today, rich data and powerful algorithms in the hands of domain experts have transformed decisions about marketing and advertising, but not those decisions about how we maintain our urban infrastructure and built environment. It is time to understand how these approaches can be applied to the challenges in adaptive monitoring and control of civil infrastructure systems, and to invent the tools which will allow researchers and practitioners to better leverage these approaches so that decision-making will be based on all available data. In this first part of the talk, we will discuss the fundamentals of reproducible data science and analytics, probability and statistics, and machine learning to leverage data generated within transportation systems, environmental systems, building energy systems, and power grids, via crowd-sensing, and remote sensing technologies. In the second part of the talk, we will discuss issues related to Social Media Intelligence where Social media intelligence (SMI) is a collective tools and solutions that allow organizations to monitor social channels and conversations, respond to social signals and synthesize social data points into meaningful trends and analysis based on the user’s needs. Social media intelligence allows one to collect intelligence gathering from social media sites, using both intrusive and non-intrusive means, from open and closed social networks.  Speaker(s): Seifedine Kadry, Location: Room: CEIT 102 University of Dubai P. O Box 14143 Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Seminar: What might it mean for security to be sustainable?

When: April 3, 2017 @ 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: Room: 007, Bldg: A6

Co-sponsored by: Hoda Al-Khazaimi People talk about what computing can do for sustainability, but a more concrete and urgent problem is how computing itself can become more sustainable. As all sorts of things from medical devices to cars go online, they will start to need monthly software updates, or the latest security vulnerabilities will cause safety problems too. The safety case for your SUV or your insulin pump will no longer be just a matter of pre-market testing; it will need to be maintained. We did a study for the European Commission of the implications for product regulation, and it’s becoming clear that Europe’s ecosystem of safety regulators, standards bodies and testing labs will need a substantial upgrade. The way we develop software will also have to change. If I’m writing navigation code right now in Cambridge which will appear in your SUV in 2020, how will we keep shipping security patches in 2030, 2040 and 2050? What tools will we need, and who will pay for it all? Speaker(s): Prof. Ross Anderson, Location: Room: 007 Bldg: A6 New York University (NYU) of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
