The electricity distribution is moving to a new era with the restructuring of the electricity systems and the move towards smarter grids. Embedded Generation or what is commonly known as Distributed Generation (DG), especially the renewable ones, are considered as pivotal elements in this vision. This presentation defines distributed generation and highlights the numerous advantages that DG can bring to the electricity systems. Yet, the challenges and problems that DG can bring to the utility systems will be presented. The effects of DG units on different distribution systems operational aspects such as voltage profile, losses, protection, reliability and stability will be highlighted.
